Alpine pass opening: where to check before you ride
High passes shut for snow every winter and open when the road is clear, which moves from year to year. We do not list opening dates. These are the pages that report whether a pass is open now.
Across the Alps
- Alpen-Paesse.chAn independent site that tracks the open or closed status of passes across the Alps, with recent reports. Useful for an overview, but check the official source for your country too.
By country
- Bison Futé (France)The French government's traffic information service, including road closures.
- Inforoute 38 (Isère, France)Road status for the Isère department, which covers many passes on the Route des Grandes Alpes side of the Alps. Other French departments run similar services.
- TCS (Switzerland)The Touring Club Switzerland, with traffic information and pass status.
- ÖAMTC traffic service (Austria)Austria's motoring club, with live traffic and road closures.
- Grossglockner High Alpine RoadThe road's own site, with opening times, current status and tolls.
- ANAS (Italy)The operator of Italy's state roads, with traffic and closure news.
- Statens vegvesen (Norway)The Norwegian road authority. Mountain roads such as Trollstigen close for winter.
Status pages report what the authority knows. Snow, rockfall and roadworks can close a pass at short notice in any month. If a link here is broken or a better official source exists, let us know.
