Riding on and off
- Book the bike as a motorcycle, not a car. It is usually cheaper and you load in the bike lane.
- Car decks can be wet, oily and ridged. Ride on and off slowly and keep your feet ready.
- Follow the crew's instructions for strapping the bike. Some operators supply straps, some ask you to help.
- Take what you need for the crossing off the bike before you go up. You cannot usually return to the car deck while at sea.
Cover for the trip
Before you book the crossing, check your bike insurance, travel insurance and breakdown cover all work abroad on a motorcycle. Our guide to insurance and breakdown cover for touring abroad lists what to check in each.
